Interview with Dr Thoraiya Kanafani

Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Director

1. Becoming a clinical psychologist is a huge achievement, what inspired you to get involved?

I was inspired by people's resilience and the different ways people work through difficulties in their lives. I also wanted to bring more awareness to the Eastern part of the world regarding the importance of mental health and its effects on a person's well-being.

2. What has been your biggest achievement so far?

Owning my own center has been my biggest obvious achievement. However, I consider all the individuals and couples I have helped as my true biggest achievement.

3. I'm sure that becoming a psychologist came with its own difficulties, what challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Realistically, an effective practicing psychologist should always go through their own therapy before they begin work with others. That was a challenge for me in the beginning but the value of such work became apparent very quickly. Furthermore, initially, it was difficult to highlight the importance of mental health and debunk the myths about psychology in this part of the world. However, through bridging the gap between culture, society, religion, and academia, I was able to help spread more awareness and understanding of the realities of mental health.

4. Has the recent pandemic impacted your life or your career; if so, how have you stayed motivated?

The recent pandemic has impacted all of our lives in many different ways. It has also impacted the way in which we conduct therapy (online modalities). I work towards learning new ways to interact with my clients online as well as make sure to provide the best treatment for them through new modalities.

5. What advice do you have for women who are in pursuit of their dreams?

I advise women to enjoy the process of working towards their dreams and to set realistic expectations for themselves while honoring and appreciating the steps they take to achieve their goals.

6. What life lessons have you learnt from Covid-19 that you would like to share with other aspiring women?

I have learned new ways to adapt to changing environments. I have also learned how to further appreciate the moment I am in and be grateful for what I have.

7. What are your goals for the upcoming year?

My goals are to continue taking care of myself and those around me as well as continue my professional development.

8. If you had a choice to have a superpower, what would it be?

Flying would be my superpower. I would have the ability to go anywhere at any moment.
