Interview with Sara Masinaie

1. Why did you want to pursue a career as an artist? Was this always what you wanted to do?

I wanted to become a cinematographer but when I moved back from States, where I began college, there were no film programs offered here back in the day. So I specialized in photography and was particularly interested in photojournalism. The journey to becoming an artist began with a course in ‘Photography as Art’ and from then on I experimented with various mediums and very soon the broader context of art became my means of expression whether through photography, performance or other mediums.

2. What was the biggest challenge you faced to get to where you are today?

Financials and the popular mentality that does not recognize art as a serious career that requires just as many hours, resources and dedication to sustain and succeed.

3. What piece of advice would you give to aspiring artists?

Take your time, do it with love and surround yourself with fellow creative thinkers that’ll give you honest and constructive feedback.

4. What's the best part of being an artist, or the best part of a normal day in your life?

Enjoying the process itself from concept to execution of an artwork or a project.
