Interview with Sakina Kanji

1. What inspired you to pursue your career?

I come from a family background of entrepreneurs and business talk on the dinner table was the norm. My father always encouraged all our input and motivated us to think beyond regardless of age and gender. It’s no wonder that  I’ve always had a knack for business and without realizing it, I would look for business opportunities in anything I found creative or give out free business advice whether it was asked for or not, lol. What inspired me to pursue my career in Baskilicious - which is a gifting company, is purely because I love both receiving gifts and gifting. I think it’s such a beautiful way of expressing love and showing people how much you mean to them. When done creatively, it adds so much more meaning.

2. What do you most enjoy about your profession?

This best part is in the end. That look on people’s faces, or the excited messages they share after receiving the gift baskets, makes me feel like my passion of spreading love, joy and happiness are accomplished - and that is what drives me

3. What difficulties have you endured to get to where you are today?

Initially, I was unsure if the concept would take off and if people would see value in what I was offering. Through consistent hard work, constantly exploring new and creative ideas, a great support system, my confidence in my work has boosted.

4. What are your goals for 2020?

For my business to be known as one of the most prominent businesses in the gift industry.

5. What advice do you have for women who are in pursuit of their dreams?

Don’t be afraid to start something and don’t be afraid of failing. Surround yourself with positive energy and take risks. You will achieve more when you come out of your comfort zone. When you fail, you learn and grow from those experiences.

I tried different business ventures and it’s through trial and error I found my passion and thus Baskilicious was born.

6. What life lessons have you learnt from Covid-19 that you would like to share with other aspiring women?

You need to be a quick thinker and adapt to any situation. A lot of people including myself were panicking during these times and understandably. Think adaptation and keep focus. This mindset has helped me take Baskilicious to growth mode during these trying times.

7. If you were to describe yourself to the world in three words, what would they be?

Creative, fun-loving, hardworking.

8. If you were to go back in time, what would you have done differently?

Nothing. Experiences have made me grow and made me what I am today. I want to live in the now.
