Interview with Marya Merchant

Interior Designer and Artist

1. You have an eye for interior design and your paintings are absolutely incredible, what inspired you to pursue your career?

I am constantly inspired by my family, especially the women. My parents have a keen sense of aesthetic and great organisational skills, my aunt is a fashion designer and an artist, my eldest sister is an interior designer and my other sister and aunt are talented craftswomen.  Their continuous pursuit of beauty and excellence in their work motivates me to do the same.

2. What do you most enjoy about your profession?

What I enjoy most about my profession is creating designs and art that enrich people’s lives and improve their wellbeing.

3. I'm sure that becoming an interior designer came with its own difficulties, what challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

One of the challenges I faced as an interior designer was learning to cope with deadlines and delivering quality work in a limited timespan. I overcame this by staying organised and constantly looking for new ways to improve work efficiency.

4. Has the recent pandemic impacted your life or your career; if so, how have you stayed motivated?

The pandemic did affect my interior design career as it became hard for me to find work. Fortunately, with all the free time I had, I resorted to painting. For me art has always been a hobby but the pandemic changed that completely. I soon realised that art could be more than just a pastime and I joined an art program in order to pursue it professionally and even participated in a few exhibitions.

5. What advice do you have for women who are in pursuit of their dreams?

I think the most important thing whenever you want to achieve anything is to have the right mindset. If you think that you CAN achieve it, then you will spend your time planning on how to do it and then take action accordingly. But if you think that you CAN’T achieve, you probably won’t be able to.

6. What life lessons have you learnt from Covid-19 that you would like to share with other aspiring women?

Covid 19 taught me that not everyday will be the same and not everything will happen according to how we plan. This lesson has helped me become more patient and realise that when the time is right, things will fall into place.

7. What are your goals for the upcoming year?

My goal for the upcoming year is to continue to grow spiritually and creatively, develop my own personal aesthetic style and create a niche for myself both as an artist and a designer.

8. If you had a choice to have a superpower, what would it be?

I love engaging in aerial adventure sports, so my choice of superpower would definitely be the ability to fly!
