Interview with Azurra Bukhari

  1. What inspired you to pursue your career?

I have always enjoyed acting, and some might say I am very dramatic at times, lol. I started modelling when I was 2 years old. I was scouted by a casting agent at the mall for a Macaroni Grill Ad campaign that was new to the Gulf Region. However, I would say it took off a few years ago when I attended a program for budding actors.  I ended up signing with Bareface Modelling Agency and Wilhelmina Models Dubai.  Since then I have been busy with both modelling and acting jobs throughout the year. I acted in season 1 of Go Iguanas (an American online tv show), and in a variety of commercials and social media shoots. Some of these include L’oreal, Glad, Cadbury Silk Chocolate, Nutella, Warner Brothers, Jelly Belly, Goody Pasta, Fly Dubai, Mall of the Emirates, IMG Amusement Park and Yas Waterpark. Shoot days are intense, with early morning starts for hair, makeup, lines, and re-doing scenes until just right, but when you see the finished products, it's always worth it.

2. What do you most enjoy about your profession?

I love the experience, challenges and pleasure I derive from it. Whilst its hard work, I love seeing how the pieces come together and especially love seeing the final product. It allows me to meet a number of people from different backgrounds that I wouldn’t otherwise meet.

3. What difficulties have you endured to get to where you are today?

It's sometimes challenging managing my schedule;  balancing school which is my main priority vs castings and shoots.  To help manage it, that I have an app that helps me stay get organized, as well as receive help from my parents, my grandmother, and teachers at my school who are very supportive. It comes with a lot of backing from loved ones, who I am always grateful to.

 4. What are your goals for 2020?

Stay positive, stay in my lane focusing on what I love to do and what makes me happy, continue to grow and develop as an individual. I am currently signed up to learn sign language for example.

5. What advice do you have for women who are in pursuit of their dreams?

Believe in yourself, and even when people tell you its 'cringey' or try to dissuade you from pursuing your dreams if it brings you happiness don’t give up. People spend a lifetime searching for contentment so if you’ve found it, you’re ahead of the game. But also be kind; to people, whether on set, at school,  in every aspect of your life, because this quality people will remember.

6. What life lessons have you learnt from Covid-19 that you would like to share with other aspiring women?

Covid-19 has taught me to appreciate the small things in life and not to take anything for granted.  I value my family and appreciate the time this virus has freed up in my life. Each moment of the day is precious and it's important to make it count. Use the time to enrich your lives and avoid focusing on the negatives. Choose to use the time and appreciate the opportunity to develop new skills, and as important, self-care (mediation, journaling, yoga, exercise, good eating habits).

7. If you were to describe yourself to the world in three words, what would they be?

Fun, positive, caring

8. If you were to go back in time, what would you have done differently

I would spend less time worrying about silly things. Now if I find myself overthinking something, I ask if it make a difference in a year. If the answer is no, I move on.
