Interview with Arwa

1. What inspired you to pursue your career?

It all started in my mother's kitchen. She encouraged my sisters and I to help her in the kitchen. The smell of freshly baked cakes and cookies overtook the house. Since that moment, I knew I wanted to be a baker.

After High school, I enrolled into a Hotel Management Program followed by a job in the pastry department at a leading Hotel property in Dubai. However, just after a month into the job I realized this wasn’t where I wanted to be. I always wanted a business of my own. That made me take the plunge and start my own business back in 2005.

2. What do you most enjoy about your profession?

Everything about it!!!! No two days are ever the same. With the constant change in styles and trends, the learning never stops and that’s the best part of it.

3. What difficulties have you endured to get to where you are today?

It was definitely hard initially to create a market. I started out sampling with friends and family who in turn would refer me to their friends. This helped me create a niche.

Next was the price as each cake is hand crafted. The hours & the labour that go into creating each piece defines the price. People initially weren’t used to that concept. When compared to a local bakery, the prices were always higher, but slowly that started to overcome as they saw the quality they were getting in return.

4. What makes you smile and what scares you the most?

The fact that I bring a smile to someone’s face each day! The look on the face of the celebrant on seeing the cake and the messages after the party makes it worth all the effort.

What scares me the most…. Not being able to live up to a client’s expectation. I always do my best with every cake I create, but sometimes a client has a different vision for the cake which is perceived by me. An unhappy client is what scares me the most.

5. What advice do you have for women who are in pursuit of their dreams?

Don’t give up, as cliché as it sounds, it’s true. If you’re passionate about what you do nothing can stop you.

6. What life lessons have you learnt from Covid-19 that you would like to share with other aspiring women?

Changing with time is the only way to move ahead. You got to think out of the box!

7. What are your goals for the upcoming year?

To build a team so I can get some more time to focus on my creativity. Start teaching again, that’s always been a passion.

8. If you had a choice to have a superpower, what would it be?

Definitely an extra pair of hands, that’s my biggest asset ;)
